At its heart lies the Milky Way, a luminous band of stars traversing the night sky. Understanding its appearance and positioning throughout the seasons is crucial, mainly focusing on capturing its brightest segment – the galactic core.
Experienced stargazers know that the orientation and timing of the galactic core vary each month and season. Thorough planning before shooting is the key to success. In the Northern Hemisphere, summer nights offer the most vivid views of the Milky Way's core, while winter presents only its fainter outskirts. The reverse holds in the Southern Hemisphere.
We know that the Moon orbits the Earth, while the Earth and other planets orbit the Sun, and the Sun, along with other galaxies, orbits the center of the Milky Way. However, as the Sun and the Milky Way are not aligned, the galaxy's position in the night sky shifts with the seasons. Nonetheless, the core's position remains relatively stable over consecutive nights, allowing for minor daily variations to be disregarded.
In general, the core of the Milky Way is visible in the Northern Hemisphere from March to October and in the Southern Hemisphere from February to October. However, the optimal shooting times vary monthly, with an average delay of approximately two hours.
Consequently, in March and April, the core rises before dawn, while it gradually sets after sunset in October. During winter in the Northern Hemisphere and summer in the Southern Hemisphere, the core increases during daylight hours, rendering it invisible due to the Earth's rotation.
Due to differences in geographical location and axial tilt, the shapes and orientations of the Milky Way differ between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Astrophotography must adhere to natural laws, ensuring images depict scenes occurring at specific moments in the natural world and avoiding comical scenarios resulting from post-processing manipulation that contradicts natural laws.

Enhancing Photos with Moonlight:

Astrophotography unfolds under the night sky, inevitably involving the Moon. Its brightness can either enhance or detract from the allure of the stars, influencing the quality of Milky Way shots. Determining the best shooting dates entails understanding lunar phases, an essential aspect of astrophotography.
Many mistakenly believe that the Moon rises only at night. In reality, the time of moonrise shifts approximately 50 minutes later each day, often leading to scenarios where the Moon rises during daylight hours, resulting in phenomena such as the Sun's and Moon's simultaneous appearance. Consequently, each month experiences nights devoid of moonlight, and others illuminated throughout.
The phases of the Moon – from new to full and back – provide varying degrees of illumination to its surface, creating different lunar shapes visible from Earth. Leveraging these phases can significantly enhance the visual appeal of astrophotography.
