Tennis is one of the racquet sports, with its roots in France, birth in England, and peak popularity and formation in the United States. It traces back to the 12th to 13th centuries in France.
The influential tennis court is rectangular, with a length of 23.77 meters. The singles court is 8.23 meters wide, while the doubles court is 10.97 meters wide. A net is placed in the middle, and players on each side of the court use tennis rackets to hit the ball.
The origin of tennis can be traced back to around 500 BC, as depicted in ancient Greek wall paintings. The earliest form of tennis was known as "Real tennis," which is believed to have originated in 12th-century France, where people used their palms to hit a ball in a game. By the mid-14th century, this ball game was introduced to the French court as a pastime for royal nobles.
The game was played in palace halls without a net or rackets, using hands to hit a ball made of rolled-up fabric. The term "Tennis" is derived from the French word "Tenez," meaning "Take! Throw over." In the 16th century, wooden rackets replaced hands for hitting the ball, and the balls became more refined.
In the early 16th century, the game spread to France, and improvements were made in equipment. The wooden rackets were replaced with parchment-covered boards, and the court had numerous short ropes hanging down, making the ball's path noticeable. The game was initially a privileged activity in the royal court but later became a form of gambling, leading to its prohibition by King Louis.
In the early 17th century, the court replaced the ropes with a small square net and rackets with strung net rackets, making the game more elastic and convenient. However, it later evolved into a form of gambling, leading to disputes and its prohibition by the French king in the early 18th century.
Modern tennis history is generally considered to have started around 1873 when Walter Clopton Wingfield, an Englishman, improved the early form of tennis, turning it into a summer sport played on grass courts, naming it "lawn tennis." Wingfield is often referred to as the "founder of modern tennis." Tennis became a sport played indoors and outdoors, with tennis clubs established across England.
In the 1920s, tennis gained immense popularity. From 1945 to the 1960s, tennis shifted towards professionalism, and in 1963, the women's team competition, the Federation Cup, was established.
Have you ever experienced a lot of worries and anxieties in life? Have you ever had the experience of immersing yourself in a book or a movie and forgetting about real-life troubles? If you play tennis regularly, you must have similar experiences in tennis because, at every moment of the game, you have to be entirely focused on the ball, with no time for random thoughts.
After an intense rally, you calmly walk to the serving point, regulate your breath, try to relax your body, and toss the ball upward steadily, and only then can you unleash a powerful serve containing courage and confidence. When you can't see hope, give yourself strength, treat yourself well, learn to create reasonable training plans, optimize your techniques to make your movements more fluid and relaxed, and let yourself see progress and feel a sense of achievement.
